Bursa Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum

The first museum in Bursa was established by the personal efforts of Azmi, the Director of Bursa Education and Resad, the accountant of the Boys High School by collecting ethnographic and archaeological artifacts from the surrounding area in the garden of Boys' High School. Then the museum was opened to visitors on 19 August 1902. Under the direction of Governor Mümtaz Reşid Pasha, the museum was developed and enriched in a short time with the efforts of primary education inspectors, teachers, and students. The museum in question was officially opened in 1904 by the General Manager of Museums, Osman Hamdi, as a department of Müze-i Hümayun.  The museum gained the status of directorship in 1929. In the following year, considering its development, it was moved to the Yeşil Madrasa and it was arranged and displayed by Aziz Ogan, the Director of the Istanbul Museum, and it was opened to visitors on 8 April 1930. The madrasa building was repaired in 1955 and the museum was put into service again with a new layout in October 1956. Bursa Museum, which had been operating as a mixed museum for many years, was reorganized after the archaeological artifacts were moved to the modern building built in Kültürpark and since 22 November 1975, it has been put into service under the name of Bursa Turkish Islamic Art Museum. In the museum, tiles, and ceramics from the Seljuk, Beylics, and Ottoman periods (Iznik, Kütahya) from the 13th century to the 20th century, wood, carved and inlaid works, examples of Turkish metal art, tombac and other metal works, Seljuk and Ottoman coins, traditional Turkish handicrafts and clothes are on display. In addition, Islamic period graves, tombstones, and epitaphs are exhibited in the garden of the museum. The number of Islamic coins of the Islamic Period exhibited in our museum is 66, and the number of ethnographic artefacts on display is 445. Apart from these: the number of tombs, tombstones and epitaphs in the open garden exhibition is 70. The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum was temporarily closed to visitors on 02.12.2016 due to renovation and repair with the Authority Approval dated 02.12.2016 and numbered 215957, and was opened to visitors on 24.12.2020 after the completion of the renovation and repair.
