İstanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam

The Islamic Science and Technology History Museum was built in Gülhane Park, one of the most beautiful places in Istanbul and easily accessible, adjacent to the Sur-ı Sultani wall surrounding the palace area. The Islamic Science and Technology History Museum was opened on May 24, 2008, by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is similar to the museum that Professor Doctor Fuat SEZGİN opened in 1983 within the Institute of Arab-Islamic Sciences History of Goethe University in Frankfurt, where more than 800 models and models are exhibited.

The Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam has made very important contributions to the development of today's modern science. It is the first in its field in Türkiye with an exhibition area covering a total area of 3500 square meters where the inventions, discoveries, and studies made by Islamic scientists between the 9th and 16th centuries and a total of 585 tools, device replicas, models and models are exhibited; It is the second example in the world after Frankfurt. The museum consists of twelve sections: Astronomy, Clock & Maritime, War Technology, Medicine, Mining, Physics, Mathematics & Geometry, Architecture & Urbanism, Chemistry & Optics, and Geography.

Professor Doctor Fuat SEZGİN, who has devoted his life to promoting the History of Science and Technology in Islam by conducting research for more than fifty years, has the view that the developments in the history of science and civilization are not separate from each other, on the contrary, present a whole with his research and studies on original sources. The foundation of this museum, where the history of science and technology is the common heritage of all mankind, is the basis of Professor Fuat SEZGİN, and the works exhibited in our museum aim to show the share of the Islamic Cultural Civilization in this heritage. In addition, the İstanbul Museum of Islamic Science and Technology History sheds light on the present and the future by revealing the process in the history of sciences of the Islamic world in the past with its works and documents, as well as having a special impressive power with the aesthetics and teaching of scientific works on the one hand, and the impression it leaves and the knowledge it gives on the other.

In terms of the history of science, it is also important for future generations in terms of being a bridge uniting the east-west scientific culture. Professor Doctor Fuat SEZGİN, who left valuable works on Islamic Civilization in his life that he continued for almost a century, passed away on June 30, 2018, at the age of 94. The year 2019 has also been declared the Year of Fuat SEZGİN by the Presidency for the great scholar and scientist.
